World of Wine: Alsace & Germany (Reading)
Welcome to the World of Wines tasting on Alsace, Germany & Austria. Time to discover the aromatics of Europe!
Part 1 – Alsace
Lying on the east side France next to the border with Germany, Alsace is as German as it is French in terms of population, architecture and its grape varieties: Germanic Riesling and Gewurztraminer are found here side-by-side with French Pinot Blanc and Gris, all adding to a small-but-complex wine-producing region offering the most aromatic and different styles in comparison to the rest of France. It’s unusual, it’s unique, it’s great!
Part 2 – Germany & Austria
Ignore the reputation of German wines for a moment, brought about by mass-produced sweetish wines such as “Liebfraumilch”. Slowly but surely, German producers have now upped their game so that they now produce some of the finest wines in Europe: good white wines are now dominated by dry, acidic and mineral-led styles from Riesling, Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder) and Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder). At the same time, German reds have improved immensely, especially the complex and wondrous Pinot Noirs (Spätburgunder) from the warmer south of the country. We’ll uncover these secrets and include a sample of Austria’s flagship variety, Grüner Veltliner.
All tastings include; minimum of 6 wines sourced locally so you can find them easily if you like them, full tasting notes, tasting sheet, use of professional tastings glasses and nibbles.
